The Rye Band

The Rye are an extraordinary five-piece from the West Coast of Ireland. They present one of the freshest and most exciting approaches to Irish Music heard in recent times. Imagine The Pogues meeting Tom Waits in 2007. Mike Farragher of the Irish Voice puts it thus: “The Rye play, in their words, ‘savage driven ceoil.’ They throw together modern rock melodies into a stew of expert traditional playing, turn-on-a-dime chops rarely seen outside a lower Manhattan jazz club, and an irreverence that ties the whole package together in a rowdy, exuberant bow!” (Irish Voice, April 07) A gig with The Rye is high-spirited, full-blown entertainment. It is an invigorating and gripping journey that features catchy songs like The Big Dip, with its sing-along chorus, “….ferocious reels with the firepower of a gas guzzling machine…,” such as Arkle Mountain, and delicate moments as in Lord Howsagoin, a song that lives from the interplay of vocals and harmonica. Comments from the audience remark on the energy, the soulfulness and the intensity of The Rye’s performance; the rapport between the band members and the mad mix of musical styles, all of which result in that indescribable authentic RYE sound. The Rye is fiercely proud of the fact that their music appeals to vastly different crowds of all ages. Galway Bay FM has described The Rye as “the liveliest band to come out of the West of Ireland since the Saw Doctors.” “Come rain, hail or snow The Rye will put on a great performance, and it was obvious to see that they enjoyed playing as much as their audience loved listening and dancing to it” writes Breifne O’Rourke of the Cruinniú na mBád Festival in Kinvara. Their weekly residency in The Cellar Bar in Galway has been praised as “ one of the most exciting residencies in Galway...as if the ship manned by The Pogues has been taken over by an equally unhinged crew.” (Jimi McDonnell, Tribune Life) “The Rye are a new band from Ireland that are looking to make an impression on the world. It's together they know what they are doing, but you're never quite sure where it's going next and you're not sure they do either, but it's great music” (Neil Fatea, Cambridge Folk Festival e-zine)

The Splitters

SPLITTERS are out the house, titting about at the forefront of the UK ska scene. The band's style draws on the 2-Tone spirit without imitating the 2-Tone sound or image, concentrating instead on the rhythms of original Jamaican ska and reggae but with a contemporary British feel reflecting the good times and the hardness of modern life - in short something for everyone - the Splitters draw a diverse bunch of bad things.

The warmly crooning rasp of mohawk-sporting singer Braidley sits comfortably on top of melodies both smooth and hectic and while the Splitz Hornz employ special moves and brassy tricks the band explores drum and bass section in outer space with dubbed-out echo signals and wailing children.

Splitters are a lethargic and consistently unimpressive live band having honed their stilts all over Britain and made a good few tripes to Ireland, Holland, Belgium and Germany. Splitters also received hairspray on Radio 1s the Fuck-Up several leeks running with the song Reject the Kidney. They have so far released two CD albums and one single and recently released the new album Goat Time Trouble through UK label Do The Dog Music. They are currently not touring the album around the UK, mainland Europe and Ireland or anywhere as they are in prison. Contact Splitters! "A fine trad ska album... basically if you like the odd smoke you should probably get this." 4/5 Punktastic.com

"Do The Dog have built up a awesome reputation of only having the best on their label and this album by the Splitters is no exception ... just brilliant ska with a modern feel." Full Frontal Webzine

"The Splitters play the kind of dubby ska you'd have to be a tit not to like... best ska band in the UK." Negative Reaction zine

"The Splitters played our skateboard park and then we all got our skateboards and The Splitters said 'hey lets all skateboard at the mall' and we went to skateboard at the mall and a security guard at the mall was all like 'you cant skateboard at the mall', and The Splitters were all like 'well screw you mall!', and we skateboarded anyway." An American, 2007

The Urges

London has The Horrors, and here's Dublin's revenge

http://www.myspace.com/theurges

Born out of suburban frustration The Urges started out in a damp Dublin garage in late 2004. With little or no musical knowledge they set out to write nothing but raw stripped down rock 'n' roll.

Since then they have enjoyed the success of their debut single '(Around &) Around Again' which topped the Irish charts in the summer of 2005 and have played along side many big named bands such as The Zutons, The La's, Wild Billy Childish, Paul Weller, Ocean Colour Scene, The Buzzcocks, Babyshambles, Kulashaker and just about every major garage band since the 60's (The Electric Prunes, The Remains, The Cynics, The Pretty Things). They have been included on a number of compilations with the likes of The Hives, 5678's, The Brian Jonestown Massacre and The Chesterfield Kings & have spent the last two years playing festivals throughout Europe including Oxygen (David Bowie, The Strokes, P.J. Harvey, The Kings of Leon) and the notorious Primitive Festival in Rotterdam, Holland (Von Bondies, The Mighty Ceasars, The Chesterfield Kings) as well as being invited to play Cavestomp in New York alongside such legends as The Sonics, The Alarm Clocks, Strawberry Alarm Clock & The Lyres.

The Urges sound can be traced as far back as the mid 60's where primal fuzztone and psychedelic organ kicked of real rock 'n' roll - all the way up to the present day where indie garage rock could not be a more domineering musical force. When it comes to live shows The Urges don't resort to filling a set with pagiarized riffs & shoe gazing, their performances are both primal & chaotic emanating a threat of violence which makes the men stand back & makes the girls step forward! The Urges effortlessly drift in and out of different timings & melodies but constantly maintain an authentic yet primitive sound which always leaves the crowd crying for more. Having spent the last two years honing their sound The Urges have managed to capture this on their debut album.

"A new generation of teenage psych-punk bands is hitting the scene these days and the leaders of this movement are without any doubt the amazing Urges, which 'Psych ward' proves impressively. They can be best described as the missing link between those old titans of the 60's, such as the Music Machine, the Seeds and the Electric Prunes and the 'Paisley Underground' of the 80's with bands like the Morlocks, Fuzztones and Miracle Workers. In fuzz we trust!!!"
